Generalities:
The plant of the cherries "bigarreau" è the first to ripenpreventing various insects from feeding on it. The fruit, medium to large in size, mostly has a heart-shaped profile, a peel bright red in colour with flashes tending towards brown and a pulp crunchy, firm and sweet. It is an excellent table fruit and has the particularity of resisting splitting (cracking), keeping well and withstanding transport to the retailer's counters without losing its firm texture. The Duron Pélissier is a variety created in 1886 and marketed from 1893 by Auguste Pélisser, a nurseryman from Châteaurenard (Bouches-du-Rhône). It is said to have been the fruit of accidental sowing. Depending on the cultivation areas the fruit ripens between the end of May and the end of June. Bois (Les plantes alimentaires, 1927) describes it as a 'very beautiful and good fruit'. The skin has a colour red dark with lighter speckles. The flesh is fine, blood-red and very juicy. The plant is vigorous and has a straight trunk, blooms mid-season, with a tendency to alternate.
Cultivation and Care:
The trees of Cherry tree are easy to grow, not afraid of frost, even intense frost. They are planted in a well sunnyas the absence of direct sunlight often causes a lack of flowers; for some varieties it is convenient to plant a few plants close together, so that cross-pollination of the flowers ensures good fruiting. Adult cherry trees not need of wateringwhile young, recently planted trees need sporadic watering, providing at least a couple of buckets of water during the hot, dry days of summer. They strongly fear waterlogging, so let's plant the cherry trees in land cool and very well drained, avoiding excessive watering. Pruning is generally practised only in the first years of the plant's development, in order to give the foliage a wide and well-aired shape; adult specimens are not pruned, except in the case of broken branches or those damaged by winter cold or weather. For some varieties, however, it is important to periodically remove the basal suckers, which tend to develop rapidly, to the detriment of the main plant and fruit. Fertilisation is done in autumn and at the end of winter, providing well-matured manure, to be spread at the foot of the stem, or slow-release granular fertiliser, rich in nitrogen.
