White Hardenbergia violacea is an Australian evergreen climbing plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. Native to eastern Australia, it is widespread on coasts, mountains, forests and heaths. It is known as 'false Australian sarsaparilla' because it has the habit of a climbing liana with an anti-clockwise spreading habit. It is suitable for decorating pillars, fences and berceau or terraces and balconies. The leaves are narrow, leathery, lanceolate and dark green with conspicuous veins. Its flowers have the typical structure of leguminous plants and flowering occurs between January and February, when abundant spikes of generally purple colour with white pea-like buds appear. This plant is also suitable as a natural ground cover due to its ground cover habit but can climb vigorously if given something to support it. Its size and appearance may vary depending on the season and when it is purchased.
