The Jujube plant is the jujube plant, a shrub also known as Zizyphus sativa or Chinese Date, which belongs to the Rhamnaceae family and is of Chinese origin, appreciated as far back as ancient Greece. Capable of reaching fairly high heights, but very slow growing, it has thorny, zigzagging branches, bright green leaves with an almost serrated edge and white flowers. The fruits are about the size of an olive, have yellowish flesh, a brownish-brown skin and a sweet flavour. The jujube plant only produces fruit at the end of the summer months, with the beginning of autumn (September). In Eastern medicine, the therapeutic properties of jujubes are used to relieve symptoms of depression, physical fatigue, irritability and nervousness. In cooking they are used to make jams, syrups and liqueurs.

Description
