The maracuja plant, scientific name Passiflora Edulis, belongs to the Passifloraceae family and is a climbing plant native to tropical regions. The fruit of the maracuja is dark oval in shape and contains a soft, yellowish pulp inside; it is recommended to shelter it from direct frost in winter.
The fruit:
Passion fruit is predominantly composed of water (73%) along with protein, fat, ash, dietary fibre, carbohydrates and sugars; there are also fair amounts of minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc and selenium. There are also good proportions of vitamins in this fruit, particularly those of the C, A, B2 and B3 groups, K, J along with beta-carotene. Due to the presence of beta-carotene and bioflavonoids, maracuja possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; its intake protects the skin from the elements and fights free radicals. It also contains a high percentage of Omega 6, an essential fatty acid (therefore not produced by the human body) that, together with Omega 3, plays an important role in human health.
