FAMIGLIA: Rutaceae
DESCRIZIONE: Genere di circa 12 specie di alberi e arbusti sempreverdi, originari dell’Estremo Oriente. Il Citrus medica è un piccolo albero con rami spinosi e le foglie ovate o ovato-oblunghe. I germogli e le foglie giovani sono di colore rossiccio. I piccioli fogliari non sono alati. I fiori sono bianchi internamente e soffusi di viola all’esterno, solitari o riuniti. La fioritura è continua; comunque i frutti migliori sono quelli derivati dai fiori prodotti in maggio-giugno. I frutti sono simili nell’aspetto ai limoni, ma considerevolmente più grandi e con buccia molto spessa; hanno forma oblunga od ovale e polpa ridotta acida. La scorsa è utilizzata per produrre canditi; la polpa si impiega per estrarre l’acido citrico.
ESIGENZE PEDOCLIMATICHE: I cedri sono piante adatte per le zone a clima caldo e non resistono al freddo e alle gelate; in Italia sono coltivati nel meridione, sulle isole e là dove le temperature non scendono al di sotto dei +2°/0°C. Gli agrumi prediligono terreni sciolti e fertili, possibilmente con buon contenuto in sostanza organica e rifuggono i terreni eccessivamente calcarei. I cedri non resistono alla siccità e durante la stagione secca vanno annaffiati e concimati regolarmente.

Its peel, lemon-yellow when ripe, thick, smooth and ribbed, is used for the production of candied fruit. The pulp is scanty, almost dry, with an acid lemon-like flavour.
