Pistacia Lentiscus or simply Lentiscus is a perennial outdoor plant native to Mediterranean countries and belonging to the Anacardiacea family. It is a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub that can reach 3-4 metres in height. It has an erect habit and is composed of a fairly short stem, reddish bark and a round crown; the leaves are glossy and fragrant dark green. Flowering is in summer with the production of dark green female flowers, while the male flowers are red in colour, followed in winter by the fruits which appear as small edible red berries. In the past, the mastic tree was used for many purposes: oil was obtained for food, the wood was used for inlay work, and the leaves were used for tanning leather. Nowadays, the pinta is mainly used for carved hedges but can also be planted in containers; it requires exposure in areas in direct contact with sunlight, adapting also to positions in places where penumbra is prevalent. It adapts to any type of soil although a universal soil of good quality and with good drainage is recommended, while watering should only take place when the substrate is completely dry.
