La Strelitzia Nicolai o chiamata anche Uccello del Paradiso Gigante è una pianta da esterno originaria del Sud Africa ed appartenente alla famiglia delle Strelitziaceae. Si tratta di pianta cespugliosa sempreverde solitamente molto longeva che può svilupparsi sino a 6 metri di altezza; presenta lunghi steli che supportano le foglie dalla forma ellittica, lunghe anche sino a 2 metri e di un colore verde chiaro. Si differenzia dalla Strelitzia Reginae per una grandezza più esuberante ed una fioritura primaverile ed estiva con la produzione di fiori dalla forma di becco di uccello, da cui deriva il nome, di colore bianco. Molto apprezzata come pianta ornamentale sia per ambienti interni che per giardino, purchè le temperature non scendano per lunghi periodi sotto i 5-0 gradi; preferisce una postazione in luoghi particolarmente luminosi ma può essere posizionata all’esterno in zone di ombra parziale. Il terreno ideale deve essere fertile e ben drenato con innaffiature regolare nei periodi caldi, sporadica nei mesi freddi prestando sempre attenzione ai ristagni.
